Alfred Marshall's birthday
The Department of Economics celebrated the renowned economist Alfred Marshall’s birthday on July 26. To honor his contributions to the field of economics, students presented his key ideas and theories to their peers. The presentations covered a range of Marshall’s work, including his concepts of supply and demand, consumer surplus, and the theory of value. This event provided a platform for students to engage with and appreciate Marshall’s lasting impact on economic thought. The discussions fostered a deeper understanding of his theories and their relevance in contemporary economic analysis. The celebration was a valuable educational experience, highlighting the importance of historical perspectives in the study of economics.
Live cast of the Interim Budget Presentation
The Department of Economics organized a live cast of the Interim Budget presentation for the fiscal year 2024 – 25 on July 23, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. Students from the economics department attended the event. The interim budget presentation provided our students with valuable insights into the government’s financial planning and policy measures for the upcoming fiscal year. It offered a practical understanding of the budgeting process, fiscal policies, and government economic priorities. This experience enhanced the students’ knowledge of real-world economic scenarios and the impact of fiscal decisions on the economy. The live cast of the Interim Budget presentation was an enriching educational experience for our students.
Welcomes Freshmen with a Vibrant Freshers' Day Celebration
The Department of Economics warmly welcomed the new freshmen to the esteemed campus of SRM Institute of Science & Technology on July 23, 2024. Freshers’ Day was entirely organized by the II B.Sc Economics students, who greeted their juniors with warmth and enthusiasm. The event featured delightful dance and medley singing performances, and engaging games like connections and Pictionary to help everyone get to know each other. As a gesture of goodwill, the seniors presented the juniors with a small hamper, and the event concluded with a snack treat. We, at the Department of Economics, are proud of our II B.Sc students for their meticulous planning and execution of Freshers’ Day.
One-Day Intensive Workshop on Usage of E-Resources for Social Science Research
As part of the Amartya Economics Club, students from II B.Sc. Economics participated in a “One-Day Intensive Workshop’ on ‘Effective Usage of E-Resources for Social Science Research” on 10 July 2024, organized by the Madras Institute of Development Studies (MIDS), Adyar, Chennai. The students found the workshop useful for accessing and retrieving essential data from various databases. This skill is vital for their studies as economics students
Three day Workshop on Econometrics
The Department of Economics organized a three-day workshop focusing on Econometrics using R. The workshop aimed to harness research talents and inspire research among students, scholars, academicians, and industrialists
Scope of the Workshop:
R, A programming language with extensive applications in various fields, especially Economics, formed the core of the workshop. Participants were introduced to its utilities in data analysis, statistical modeling, and machine learning. The workshop highlighted R’s diverse statistical functions, its support for hypothesis testing, regression analysis, and its popularity in academic research across multiple disciplines.
Amartya Visits Artha!!
ARTHA, organized by the Department of Economics at Madras Christian College, Chennai, is an annual two-day departmental program held on January 22nd and 23rd, 2024.
All students from the AMARTYA club at the Department of Economics, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur, actively participated in the event. Two students from I. B.Sc. Economics, Harsha Vardhini K. and Sandhya Shree M., presented a paper titled ‘Role of AI in transforming the Indian Economy’ during the paper presentation event held in the second session of the first day of Artha on January 21st, 2024.
We greatly appreciate our students’ participation.
Women’s Day Celebration
The Department of Economics at SRM Institute of Science and Technology proudly celebrated International Women’s Day on March 8, 2024. Faculty and students from the department participated enthusiastically in the celebration. Our female students led us through various melodies, and the day was filled with joy and happiness.
Budget Analysis - 2024
On February 6, 2024, SRMIST’s Department of Economics orchestrated a significant “Budget Analysis – 2024 event, in association with the Departments of Commerce, Accounting Finance, and Corporate Secretarieship. This collaborative effort aimed to provide students with comprehensive insights into budgetary matters and process. The event took place at the prestigious Hippocrates Auditorium and featured CA K Hariharan, a distinguished Chartered Accountant, as the guest speaker.
World Wildlife Day & Forests Day
World Wildlife Day, observed on March 3rd, and International Day of Forests, celebrated on March 21st, serve as a reminders of our responsibility to protect the natural world that sustains us. In recognition of these important days, a drawing competition and presentation were organized by the Department of Economics to raise awareness and inspire action towards wildlife conservation and forest preservation for our future.
The drawing competition aimed to engage students in creatively expressing the significance of wildlife and forests through art. Participants were invited to unleash their imagination and talent to produce posters that conveyed messages of conservation, biodiversity, and the interconnectedness of all living beings with their habitats. Guidelines were provided by Dr Gopi D, Asst. Professor to ensure that the posters reflected the themes of the events, emphasizing the urgency of protecting endangered species, promoting sustainable forestry practices, and highlighting the intrinsic value of biodiversity.
Dr Prakash V, Head, Department of Economics & The NSS Programme Coordinator, SRMIST, gave a concluding message as, “As we celebrate World Wildlife Day and International Day of Forests, let us remember the lessons learned from this endeavor and continue to work together towards a more sustainable and harmonious relationship with nature. Together, we can make a difference in the world”
Helmet Awareness Campaign
The first-year students of Department of Economics of Faculty of Science and Humanities, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur conducted a “HELMET AWARENESS CAMPAIGN” on 13th February 2024 at 2.00 pm. The objective of the campaign is to create awareness on the need to wear helmets.
The rally was inaugurated by Dr. A. Vinay Kumar, Pro Vice-Chancellor (SBL) of SRMIST KTR, and program was graced by Dr. A. Duraisamy, Dean of FSH, and Dr. Albert Antony Raj, Deputy Dean of FSH, Dr T Lakshmanan NSS Program Advisor, Dr V Prakash NSS Program Coordinator Dr. D. Gopi NSS Faculty Coordinator.
The campaign started from FSH and covered the surrounding areas of the college. As part of the program, all the students carried out the campaign using placards holding slogans and distributed pamphlets on the importance of wearing helmets.
Even after the compulsory helmet rule enforcement our few fellow citizens choose not to wear helmets. Our students took a pro-active effort to reach out to two-wheeler riders and create awareness to start wearing helmets immediately without any delay.
The rally ended successfully in SRM Tech Park at 3.00 pm and refreshments were provided to the participants and the faculty members who actively took part in the rally.
